Enroll Your Daughter in Our Empowering Girls Workshop to build self-esteem and social skills

The formative years of childhood and adolescence are critical for developing a strong sense of self and the ability to form healthy relationships. For girls aged 9-13, this time can be particularly challenging as they navigate the complexities of growing up. The Self-Esteem and Social Skills Workshop for Girls is designed to empower young girls with the tools and knowledge they need to foster a positive self-image, build inner strength, and cultivate healthy relationships.

Our upcoming session begins on October 15, 2024, at the Child & Family Therapy Center, and space is limited to only eight participants. This workshop provides a supportive environment where girls can engage in interactive activities, have meaningful discussions, and experience personal growth over the course of six weeks.

Program Overview

Our workshop meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 PM to 7:45 PM. Each session is thoughtfully structured to guide the girls through a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and confidence. Below is a detailed overview of what each week will entail.

Week 1: Introduction and Self-Discovery

The first week sets the foundation for the entire workshop. During these initial sessions, the girls will get to know each other and begin exploring their identities. We start with fun icebreakers and a “pre-test” activity that assesses their current understanding of self-esteem.

One of the key activities in Week 1 is the “Who Are You?” exercise. Using M&Ms to answer identifying questions, each participant will reflect on her personal traits and begin the journey of self-discovery. This activity not only helps break the ice but also allows the girls to start thinking about what makes them unique.

Week 2: Understanding and Building Self-Esteem

In the second week, we delve deeper into the concept of self-esteem—what it is, how to build it, and how to support others in doing the same. Through discussion cards, we facilitate open conversations that encourage the girls to share their thoughts and experiences.

We also introduce self-esteem journals during this week. These journals provide a space for the girls to document their thoughts, feelings, and growth throughout the program. This practice of journaling helps them track their progress and serves as a personal tool for reflection and empowerment.

Week 3: Discovering Inner Beauty

The focus of the third week is on helping the girls understand and appreciate their inner beauty. Through activities like the Scribble Art project, they learn to see the potential for beauty in themselves and others, even in unexpected or imperfect circumstances.

Another activity, the Strength Shield, highlights each girl’s unique qualities and strengths. By creating their own Strength Shields, the girls celebrate what makes them special, fostering a stronger sense of self-worth and confidence.

Week 4: Navigating Social Media

Social media is a powerful influence on self-esteem, especially for young girls. In Week 4, we address the realities of “picture perfect” images online and how to navigate social media in a healthy way. We use a PowerPoint presentation to facilitate discussions on the impact of social media on self-esteem and empower the girls with strategies to use social media as a positive tool rather than a source of comparison or negativity.

Week 5: Building Healthy Relationships

Healthy relationships are a cornerstone of positive self-esteem. During the fifth week, the girls explore what healthy relationships look like and learn to identify safe people they can turn to for support. We engage in emotion-based activities that help the girls understand how their feelings influence their self-esteem and how to maintain positive self-regard even during challenging times.

Week 6: Reflection and Empowerment

The final week of the workshop is dedicated to reflection and celebrating the growth the girls have achieved. We start with a reflection activity where the girls share their experiences and insights from the past six weeks.

In a special closing activity, each girl receives a letter decorated with kind statements from her peers. This tangible reminder of her self-worth and the support of her group reinforces the importance of positive reinforcement and leaves her with a lasting sense of empowerment.

Why This Workshop Matters

This workshop is more than just a series of activities—it’s a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. As girls navigate the challenges of growing up, having a strong sense of self and the ability to form healthy relationships are crucial for their development. Our workshop equips young girls with the confidence and skills they need to navigate their world with resilience and self-assurance.

“Staying connected with your kids through family activities not only strengthens your bond but also helps them feel valued and supported,” says Juli Hindsley, Child Therapist at Child and Family Therapy Center in St. Petersburg.
