Therapy for Teens
Working With Your Teenager
At Child and Family Therapy Center we recognize the unique transitional period that teenagers today are navigating. Today’s teens are dealing with anxiety and depression, among other mood challenges, at a rate higher than any other generation. Unlike younger children, adolescents need therapy to be an unbiased, safe listening space. Our highly skilled therapists allow your teen to feel in control of their counseling process by meeting them where they are each session. At times this approach may be directive and solutions-focused. Other times, this may mean being a sounding board for their worries and stress.
Areas of focus include, but are not limited to: social media, cyberbullying, social skills/social anxiety, parent-teen communication, school-anxiety, college readiness, sibling dynamics, time management.
Our Approach for Teens
Child and Family Therapy Center tailors each session to meet your teen’s needs and abilities. Throughout sessions, various worksheets, activities, and stress-relieving techniques will be employed to build comfort, rapport, and trust between therapist and teen to help him or her achieve the most benefit possible from each session.
We use a combination of therapies, organized to suit the individual needs of the child:
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
- Choices Theory
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Narrative/Communication Therapy
- Family Therapy
A Typical Teen Therapy Session
Unlike with younger children, the teenager’s therapy hour is likely to be a private experience just for them. You might ask what occurred during the session, and your teen is likely to respond with “nothing” or “I don’t know” *sound familiar, teen parents?!*. Confidentiality and building and maintaining a close therapeutic relationship is crucial for progress when working with teens. While the sessions almost always include skill building worksheets, activities or talking skills, your teen will be unlikely to share this information. And that’s ok!
At Child and Family Therapy Center, we recognize the desire for parents to be aware of the counseling process for their teens. Unique to our center, each parent will get a follow-up email within 24 hour of their child’s appointment containing necessary and helpful information about their child’s progress.
